Recent Advancements in surface modification for Micro and optoelectronics
Co-organized with FBK
Chair: Massimo BERSANI, FBK

Well-defined surface modifications are crucial to numerous advanced applications especially for microelectronic and optoelectronics devices in particular. Surface modification defines the surface energy and how materials interact with a surface including important processes such as wetting, adhesion, molecular binding, electronic, optical and mechanical properties. Micro and optoelectronic devices require increasingly precise and new surface engineering for both function and processes such as thin film deposition.

A typical example might be surface functionalisation to allow directed self-assembly or selected area deposition. Surface engineering can determine the quality of thin films and their resistance to mechanical fracture. Increasingly, surface modification is used to target molecular binding and integrate electronic detection to biological assay. Micro and optoelectronic have been the catalysts for developing new approaches to surface engineering control and today they remain one of the most advanced field of innovative uses.

In the present workshop we want to provide an overview of different surface modification approaches and innovative applications in micro and optoelectronics and discuss the development of the field, new directions and the challenges remaining. An aim is to bring contributors from different fields to allow information exchange, learning and generate new ideas and concepts.

The workshop is organized in the aim of the European project Engsurf-twin (https://engsurf-twin.eu/), boosting innovation capacity in engineered surfaces and films for emerging technologies, (project i.d. 952289).
