Worldwide the green energy transition is gaining more and more endorsement. The European Commission has set ambitious targets in the new Green Deal. Moreover, by 2050, renewables could reach as much as 87% of the electricity mix. Cheap renewables and flexible demand will pave the way at a better exploitation of all storage technologies. Batteries will have a pivotal role to shift the power system away from fossil fuels and nuclear power to a cleaner society around variable renewables and emissions-free energy. Battery materials represent up to 80% of technology components costs and they also heavily influence the performances, safety and overall sustainability of the battery. In these two sections the focus will be on the R&I activities carried on the triannual national project “Ricerca di Sistema”: development and preparation of new and advanced materials for next generation batteries. Theoretical and experimental characterization methods will be also presented with regards to their application on these materials. | |||
